Course Objective To recognize the concept of being in Islam, its sources and influences; in particular, to examine and analyze the philosophy of being revealed by Ibn Sina.
Course Content Philosophy of Being in Greek Philosophy. Approaches to Being in Hellenistic Thought. Reflections of the Concept of Being in the First Islamic Thought. The First Traces of Existential Philosophy in Islamic Philosophy: Kindi. Farabi and the Understanding of Being. Analysis of Basic Concepts Related to the Philosophy of Existence before Ibn Sina. General Philosophical Thought of Avicenna. The Science of Metaphysics and Existence as the Subject of Metaphysics in Ibn Sina. Analysis of Basic Terms and Concepts Related to Being in Avicenna. Teşkik and Tavatu Concepts. Existence-Necessity Matching in Ibn Sina. The Nature of Obligation. Concepts of 'Wajib', 'Mumkin' and 'Mumtani'

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Knows the effects of Greek philosophy on Islamic philosophy in general and especially in the field of existence. Becomes aware of the discussions about existence in Islamic theology.
2Recognize the main sources of Islamic philosophy. Learns the extent and parameters of Muslim philosophers' adherence to the Greek philosophical heritage and their unique aspects.
3Gains knowledge about Ibn Sina's philosophical thoughts. Learns the basic foundations and framework of Ibn Sina's philosophy of being.
4Analyzes the effects of Ibn Sina's ontology on Islamic and western thought after him.
5He tries to redefine some of the concepts related to Ibn Sina's philosophy of being based on his works and related classical and modern studies.
