Career Opportunties
-For graduates who successfully complete the cultural heritage preservation and restoration programs in Turkey, public institutions such as the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Foundations, and public and private sectors such as archaeological excavations, museums, conservation laboratories, private collections and restoration companies. employment opportunities are available. However, the scarcity of protection elements (Conservator/Restorer) that will meet the needs in our country draws attention. -Museums and historical sites are among the most needed employment areas for conservators. The primary responsibility of museums is to protect the artifacts that are the reason for their existence and to provide the most suitable environmental conditions for them. This idea necessitates, on the one hand, more or less repair (effective protection), and on the other hand, the preparation of conditions to prevent all kinds of deterioration (preventive protection). To achieve this goal, conservation experts are needed as well as museums and exhibition designers (curators). One of the main reasons for the difficulties encountered in this regard in Turkey is the inadequacy of conservation education and the employment of permanent conservators in museums. The number of permanent conservators working in Turkish museums is increasing day by day; however, considering that there are around 185 museums and archaeological sites open to visit, and around 320 scientific excavations under the Ministry, it is clearly understood that the employment of permanent staff continues. Archaeological excavations are also conservation application areas with wide working opportunities for conservators. The preservation of archaeological finds begins at the excavation site. It is possible to transfer the artifacts unearthed under the ground to future generations without losing their archaeological knowledge and traces, by planning the excavation and conservation together. Among the decisions of UNESCO in 1956, it was emphasized that the preservation of the excavation should be planned in advance, which is too important to be left to chance. Conservation of finds or architectural remains during excavation requires the permanent presence of one or more professional conservators within the excavation team. -Another employment area for conservators is the restoration sites where practices are made to protect the architectural heritage. The preservation of original building materials and ornaments such as wall paintings, mosaics, stones, tiles, plaster, wood, metal in historical buildings is in the field of application of conservators rather than architects, and demands in this direction are increasing. There are also firming opportunities for graduates to serve the public and private sectors. Recently, the number of companies providing services related to their fields of expertise to archaeological excavations, museums, private collectors and restoration sites, especially in Istanbul, has been increasing. -The fact that the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums recently imposed conservation planning and obligation to have conservators for domestic and foreign excavations in Turkey, demands from museums and increasing interest in the subject are promising developments for graduates.
