FBE 662SOCIOSCIENTIFIC ISSUES AND TEACHING IN SCIENCE EDUCATION3 + 03rd Semester10

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course Level Doctorate Degree
Course Type Elective
Course Objective Teaching of socioscientific issues (SSI) was included in the science course curriculum in 2013 in our country as a concept for the first time. One of the items included in the main objectives of the program was stated as "Developing scientific thinking habits by using socioscientific issues" (MEB, 2013: 2). In the science course curriculum renewed in 2018, the necessity and importance of teaching socioscientific issues was clearly stated with the statement "To develop reasoning ability, scientific thinking habits and decision-making skills using socioscientific issues" (MEB, 2018: 9). The issues that do not have a single solution and in which many different dimensions such as legal, ethical and moral are involved in the solution are called “socioscientific issues” (Sadler 2004; Sadler & Zeidler, 2005). Students' education on SSI issues as scientifically literate and active role-takers in the decision-making process about the future by using their critical thinking skills is extremely important in the social dimension. With this course, it is aimed to help science teachers how to teach SSI subjects with students and how to structure their lessons.
Course Content When the literature review both in Turkey and abroad, many research focused on teachers and SSI was performed. In these studies, the results revealing the knowledge of teachers about SSI, the limitations of applying SSI in their classes and the competencies they need in applications were obtained. In the studies, it has been determined that teachers do not have enough information about SSI's and lack of knowledge about how to carry them to the classroom environment. Therefore, the course will include sample activities that teachers, who are the implementers of the curriculum, can use in their lessons about SSIs, and a content has been created on how to be a mentor in carrying SSIs to the classroom environment.
