Course Objective To provide theoretical background and application principles for design and analysis of slopes and retaining structures which interact with soil.
Course Content Excavations, support systems; Slope analysis; Retaining structures, earth pressures; Rigid and flexible support systems, types, construction methods, load effects, desing, problems in construction stages; Mechanics and construction of Reinforced Earth; Calculation of steel and shotcrete retaining structures; Case studies; Desin of large scale structures. .

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Determines lateral soil pressures and design retaining structures accordingly.
2Performs slope stability analysis of soils and design slopes.
3Evaluates the outputs of laboratory and field experiments, use them in design and prepares soil investigation reports.
4Designs braced shallow and deep excavations.
5Design retaining walls.
6Prepares projects and reports individually and as a group.
