Course Objective To introduce students to advanced soil problems, classification, and soil behavior. To provide the ability to analyze and solve the problems and issues related to soils by teaching the fundamentals and main principles of soil mechanics.
Course Content "Minerology and geology of soils; Classification of soils and TS 1900; Ground water, permeability, capillarity, swelling and shrinkage, pore pressure parameters, flow nets; Stress within a soil mass, Mohr circle and stress paths, effective and total stress principles, stress-strain relationships, concept of failure, failure theories, Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, shear testing methods, shear strength of soils, stress distribution; Theory of consolidation, settlement " .

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Performs laboratory experiments, determines soil properties and prepares report individually and as a group.
2Analyze the effects of ground water on soil behaviour.
3Understands stress-strain behaviour of soils and evaluates shear strength of soils.
4Calculates vertical stress distribution in soils.
5Understands soil improvement techniques and perform compaction analysis.
6Analyze consolidation behaviour of soils and calculates consolidation time and amount.
