Course Objective The aim of this course is to teach students causes and dimensions of social inequality and social stratification in different societies based on race, occupation, social class, and gender, which share social status, power and wealth. To have students obtain how education, occupation and income level contribute to social stratification and social inequality; what roles economic and political systems play in social stratification based on theoretical and practical information in the national and global levels.
Course Content Sociological Theories, Social Stratification, Gender and Sexuality, Ethnicity and Race, Characteristics of Turkish Society, Turkey’s Ethnic Structure and Problems, The Evaluation of Turkey’s Social Structure and Social Change, To Review Research Articles about Social Stratification and to Represent Them to the Class.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Students comprehend various types and causes of social stratification and social inequality in societies.
2Students explain how a particular racial or ethnic group, social class and gender share unequally social status, power and wealth.
3Students give examples of how education, occupation, and income levels contribute to social stratification and inequality,
4Students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of what are the roles of social, economic and political system on social stratification.
5Students objectively analyze the types of stratification based on the national and global levels.
6Students recommend appropriate solutions to the problems arising from national and global stratification systems.
7Students prepare a research paper including their own opinion and asessment about national and global social stratification by reviewing the past related scientific research.
