COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The aim of this course is to have knowledge of the fundamental principles of the basal reading and writing process, and get to know the methods used in basal reading and writing in Turkey comparatively.
Course Content Within the course, methods for basal reading and writing instruction used in the World and in Turkey are discussed and compared. Awareness is raised on the characteristics of first graders by examining the factors affecting children’s readiness for reading and writing. Focusing on the effects of individual differences among children on teaching basal reading and writing, positive and negative aspects of the adaptation and preparation process are evaluated with a scientific point of view. Discussions on the preparation process of reading and writing, and the role of families in this process are conducted while examining various studies from the literature. The theoretical aspect of the sound-based sentence method is evaluated and practices are examined based on its stages. By comparing the use of basic linear letters and italic writing, a scientific evaluation of the issue is done. Alternative suggestions are offered related to measurement and assessment in basal reading and writing. Furthermore, scientific articles on the topic are discussed. Lastly, a research design in the form of an article draft is prepared based on the scientific studies in the field.
