Course Objective Introducing to the polarizing microscope and to the techniques for the identification of minerals in thin section, Describing the behavior of light in transparent minerals, Demonstrating how the atomic structure of minerals influences the behavior of transmitted light and how this is used to identify these minerals under the polarizing microscope, to interpret of magmatic and metamorphic rock textures.
Course Content Microscope and its properties and method of study with microscope, preparation of thin section, general appearance of crystals and crystalographic properties, optical properties, study on cross nicol, study on optical figures, opaque minerals, isotrope minerals, uniax minerals, biax minerals, metamorphic rock textures, interpretations of magmatic and metamorphic rock textures. .
