COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course Level Master's Degree
Course Type Elective
Course Objective The aim of this lecture is to provide a detailed coverage of aerobic and anaerobic processes for wastewater treatment. Suspended and fixed-film biological treatment systems. Kinetic analysis and design of activated sludge sytems, aerated lagoons, oxidation ponds/ ditches, trickling biological filters, rotating biodiscs, fluidized bed systems will be covered. Anaerobic wastewater treatment processes, and nitrification/denitrification, phosphate removal processes will be examined in details. Aerobic and anaerobic stabilization of solid wastes will also be presented.
Course Content Aerobic Wastewater Treatment Processes (Suspended Growth Systems, Activated Sludge Processes); Agitated and Plug Flow Systems in Activated Sludge Processes; Modifications of Activated Sludge Processes, Aeration in Activated Sludge processes, Determination of Kinetic Constants; Mechanically Aerated Lagoons, Oxidation Ditches, Stabilization (Oxidation) Ponds; Fixed-Film Wastewater Treatment Systems; Trickling Biological Filters, Rotating Biodisc Contactors, Fluidized Bed Bioreactors, Anaerobic Wastewater Treatment Systems, Suspended Growth Systems, Standard and High rate Anaerobic Contact Processes, Upflow Sludge Blanket Reactors, Fixed -Film Systems, Anaerobic Filters, Fludized Beds and Anaerobic Filters, Nitrogen Removal from Wastewater (Nitrification, Denitrification), Phosphate Removal from Wastewaters (Luxury Phosphate Uptake Processes Phostrip, Bardenpho Processes); Combined Nitrogen and Phosphate Removal Processes (A/O, A2/O, UCT Processes)
