COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The aim of the course is exploring hematopoiesis, functions and components of blood and blood cells. The objectives of the course are, teaching basic hematological concepts, role of blood in tissue oxygenation and body defence and hemostasis.
Course Content Composition and physical characters of blood, hematopoiesis, red blood cell count and morphology, composition, membrane properties, hemoglobin, hemoglobin reactions, hemoglobin types, abnormal hemoglobins, RBC life span, destruction, hemolysis, anemia and polystemias, blood groups and transfusion, hemorheology, red blood cell mechanical properties, leukocyte counts, types and classifications, neutrophil and macrophages, phagocytosis, inflammation, reticuloendothelial system, lyphocytes, lyphocyte properties, immunity and allergy, platelets, physical and chemical characteristics, haemostasis

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Explains the physiology of blood
2Defines the contribution of blood functions to homeostasis.
3Determines hemoglobin, hematocrit, sedimentation, blood groups, crossmatch according to their rules, defines blood cells and explains their pathologies .
4Accounts for student practice on blood.
5Accounts for research on blood physiology.
