Course Objective This course embodies a historical background of English language beginning from the Old English, English and other languages spoken during the Roman and Norman conquests. It also studies the changes through Middle Ages, Renaissance, and modern times up to the twentieth century. Bu ders eski İngilizce, İngilizce ve Roma ve Normandiya fetihleri dönemlerinde konuşulan diğer dillerden başlamak üzere İngiliz dilinin tarihsel geçmişini içermektedir. This course embodies a historical background of English language beginning from the Old English, English and other languages spoken during the Roman and Norman conquests. It also studies the changes through Middle Ages, Renaissance, and modern times up to the twentieth century.
Course Content This course aims to present the historical development of English in such a way as to keep a balance between the internal history – sound change, grammatical changes – and external history – political, social and intellectual changes.

1The students will be able to identify the historical reasons behind the evolution of English throughout history.

3They will be able to understand, identify and analyse the differences occurred between the English language in Britain and other parts of the world after the 19th century.
