TIT 535THE PROBLEM OF SUBSTANCE IN THE MODERN PHILOSOPHY3 + 01st Semester7,5

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course Level Master's Degree
Course Type Elective
Course Content This course will introduce students to some major philosophers in modern philosophy. Although Descartes, Spinoza and Leibniz were highly original thinkers, they shared a basic conception of substance inherited from the Aristotelian tradition from which philosophical thinking was emerging. Ultimately they offer very different accounts of the nature of substance. Given the foundational role that substance plays in the metaphysical schemes of these thinkers, it will not be surprising to find that these theories of substance underlie dramatically different accounts of the nature and structure of reality. Contrary to these three important philosophers, it will be stated that John Locke evaluated his thoughts about the substance within the framework of his empirical ideas regarding the source, scope and limits of the information.
