Course Objective The aim of the course is to examine the significant cities of ancient Anatolian regions of Ionia, Lycia, Caria, Pisidia and Pamphylia.
Course Content The aim of the course is to examine the significant cities of ancient Anatolian regions of Ionia, Lycia, Caria, Pisidia and Pamphylia with their settlement types, strategically and economical characteristics.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Define concepts of city and village and know the first settlements and cities where started
2Know fundemental elements which constituted cities
3Know and research city plan beginning from Early Bronze Age
4Know Neolitic period settlements and know city features if there is
5Know the urbanization process from Early Bronze Age in the Anatolia and Near East
6Investigate important centers in respect to urbanization and city planning in second and first millenium B.C

Content The aim of the course is to examine the significant cities of ancient Anatolian regions of Ionia, Lycia, Caria, Pisidia and Pamphylia with their settlement types, strategically and economical characteristics.

1 Differences between city, town and village terms and location of the first urbanizations and issue of “Is Çatalhöyük a city or not?” will be discussed.
2 Urbanization in Sumer country and Nippur as example will be explained.
3 Elements which makes a settlement as a “city” will be explained.
4 Specifications which made Titriş and Kazane “city” in Eastern Anatolia will be explained. Issue of “Malatya-Arslantepe and other Eastern Anatolian settlements is a city or not?” will be discussed.
5 Urbanization progress of Early Bronze Age II in West Anatolia and appearance of “cities in real meaning” and general specifications of them will be explained. Küllüoba, Demirci, Troia EBA I and II Periods’ settlements will be explained in details.
6 The development and growing of Troia and its urbanization progress till 2nd millennium B.C. will be explained.
7 Cities of 2nd millennium B.C. and especially Karum of Kültepe which is accepted as the capital of Assyrian Commercial Colonies in Anatolia will be explained by its urbanization progress.
8 Hattusa which is the capital of the Hittites, Sarissa-Kuşaklı, Ortaköy-Sappinuva and Alacahöyük will be analyzed by its city plan and urbanization.
9 Urbanization of 1st millennium B.C. Primarily Late Hittite, Urartian cities or castles; Phrygian capital Gordion and Lydian capital Sardeis will be explained.
10 Urbanization of 1st millennium B.C. Primarily Late Hittite, Urartian cities or castles; Phrygian capital Gordion and Lydian capital Sardeis will be explained.
11 Urbanization of Archaic and Classical Periods; topographical distinction of them will be explained. Appearance of city states (Polis), citizens of them and slaves will be examined.
12 City walls which are inseperable parts of cities and later public buildings such as Acropolis, Agora, temples, Bouleterion, Prytaneion, Theater besides houses will be examined.
