COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The aim is brought knowledge and ability these topics which are working principles of the semiconductors used at power control, protection, control parts and circuits, circuit designs, motor controls and power supply design and efficiency on power electronics.
Course Content Switching loses and efficiency in power electronics. Modern power semiconductors and their characteristics; diodes, power transistors, thyristors, triacs, MOSFETs and IGBTs. Snubber and driver circuits. Components of the trigger circuits UJT, PUT, SUS, SBS. AC-to DC rectifiers, DC- to DC converters; switch mode power converters, resonant converters, DC-to AC Inverters and pulse width modulation techniques. A review of selected applications: Motor control applications and power factor correction.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Student will explain power semiconductor switches and its operation principles, and perform the analysis of switching efficiency in power electronics.
2Student will explain rectifiers, inverters and DC converters, and implement these circuits design.
3Student will design and implement snubber and driver circuits.
4Student will decide to select proper power electronics device for motor control applications and power factor correction systems.
5Student will make analysis of power electronics circuits by computer simulation.
