COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective To discuss various theoretical principles and architectural approaches within the old-new; traditional-contextual dialectics in different levels as single building and context scales. For this purpose; the students are expected to deepen their theoretical backgrounds in order to assess and shape conservation, architectural and design principles together through the implementation examples from both world and Turkey regarding urban infill in historic contexts, adaptation of historic buildings for contemporary architectural needs, refunction, new additions in historic buildings, protective shelters in archaeological sites.
Course Content The contents of the course are handled from old-new buildings in urban conservation scale to single building scale; besides the archaeological sites are subjected to discussions through protective shelter design examples for them. With the thematic presentations hold in the final of the course, it is aimed to contribute in recent discussion related to urban design-urban conservation and architectural design-architectural conservation dilemma.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Identify historical development of theoretical framework and important milestones related to conservation of historical towns and new developments phenomenon in international mediums.
2Explain how to handle the principles of historic town conservation and urban design from the point of various disciplines including architecture, urban design and urban planning.
3Identify important conceptul approaches and terminologies regarding new buildings in historic contexts.
4Develop experience in conducting theoretical discussions related to contemporary designs and new buildings in historic contexts through implementation examples from both world and Turkey.
5Conduct discussions related to assessment and desgin of historic and contemporary additions in historic buildings.
6Identify limitations, conditions, opportunities in historic contexts through the existing conservation-planning legislation in Turkey.
7Development a methodological approach regarding contextual analysis through a case-study on a historic environment; develop their analytical skills for assessment of contextual properties of historic environments as a design income and tool.
8Experience preparing a design proposal related to a new building in historic context or contemporary addition in a historic building.
