Course Objective This course aims at improving students’ ability to read and comprehend upper-intermediate level academic reading passages, to skim and scan the text in order to get the main idea and answer the relevant questions, to make inferences and summaries, to develop their academic vocabulary about the topic to guess the meaning of the academic vocabulary from the context, to make connections between the passage and their own lives and to analyze these passages and to read, comprehend authentic or semi-authentic and academic passages in order to answer questions about these passages and to improve the necessary critical thinking skills. Students will be able to prepare for real life social and academic situations at the end of the lesson.
Course Content The content of this course includes contemporary, authentic or semi-authentic and academic reading passages which improve students’ ability to read and comprehend upper-intermediate level academic reading passages and to develop reading subskills such as skimming, scanning, guessing the meaning of the academic terms from the context, summarizing, annotating, making inferences, and paraphrasing.
