COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective It is aimed at supplying students with the basic tools necessary for understanding, Understanding of the processes and describing of rock deformation and their relation to tectonics Kinematic and dynamic analysis of faults and fractures Understanding of using areas of stereografik projection Interpretation of tectonics structures On successful completion of this unit students will have understood the fundamentals of, Using of stereografik projection in structural studies The use of cleavage-bedding angles in structural geology. Learning of the dip isogon methods of fold classification. Understanding of geometric relationship between linear structures and folds To learn how to apply structural analyses in interpreting tectonically deformed terranes Understanding of the theory of plate tectonics .
Course Content Stress and their kinds, Strain, Relation of stress-strain in rocks, Mechanical behaviour of rocks, Deformation brittle and ductile, Clay experiments, Riedel experiment, Measurements of strain in rocks, Fractures and joint, Stereonet analyses of fractures, Faulting, Fault classification, Fault mechanics, Thrust faults, Strike-slip faults, Normal faults, Stereonet analyses of faults, Shear zones Fold geometry and classifications, Mechanics of folding, Complex folds, Fold interference pattern, Relationship between stress and folds, Stereonet analyses of folds, Cleavage and foliations, Kink folds and kink bands, Lineations, Geometric relationship between lineation and folds, Plate tectonics, Geometry of plate motion, Ocean ridges and trenches, Nature of plate boundaries, Structure of constructive boundaries, Structures of destructive boundaries, Structures of conservative boundaries, Tripple Junctions, Hot spots.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
