Course Objective Students will be introduced to the basic concepts, principles and constructs of classroom-based assessment; different types of tests and testing.(e.g.: proficiency, achievement, diagnostic and placement tests, direct vs. indirect testing, discrete point vs. integrative testing, norm referenced vs. criterion referenced testing, objective testing vs. subjective testing, communicative language testing) and various types of test items for a wide range of language assessment purposes, development and evaluation of such language tests in terms of different language levels.
Course Content Basic concepts, principles and constructs of classroom-based assessment; different types of tests and testing in language teaching (e.g.: proficiency, achievement, diagnostic and placement tests, direct vs. indirect testing, discrete point vs. integrative testing, norm referenced vs. criterion referenced testing, objective testing vs. subjective testing, communicative language testing) and various types of test items for a wide range of language assessment purposes, development and evaluation of such language tests and of other available types (e.g.: portfolio, self-assessment, learner diaries).

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Students can identify basic concepts of measurement and evaluation: sampling, validity, reliability, washback effect and item analysis.
2Students can see the relationship between teaching and testing.
3Students know various assessment purposes and can use alternative assessment tools.
4Students can identify and explain various approaches in the assessment of ELT.
5Students know the learning theory of each method or approach, and can identify and construct test items to test four language skills.
6Students know/can construct and adapt into their own contexts test items to assess four language skills, grammar and vocabulary.
7Students are aware of different ways of evaluating test results.
8Students can comment on the test results and provide constructive feedback to their pupils.
9Students can make item analysis and can redesign or construct their own tests.
