COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The main purposes of the course are to enable the ELT students to gain awareness on fundamental linguistic concepts and terms regarding the components of a language and the sub-fields of linguistics such as Phonetics and Phonology; to analyze a language within its own system and to reach a satisfactory literacy level to follow the related literature.
Course Content Error analysis of language learners’ production data, case studies, and comparative analysis of native and target languages; morphology; free and bound morphemes, compounds, inflectional morphology, derivational morphology, morphemic analysis, morphological typology of languages, analysis of the internal hierarchical structure of words, morpho- phonological variation; syntax: word categories, phrase and clause structure, transformational-generative grammar, government and binding, minimalist program, argument structure, theta-roles; pragmatics: deixis, implicature, conversational maxims, speech acts and politeness; sociolinguistics; dialects, register, style; discourse: criteria for textuality, types of cohesive devices, discourse connections, functions, the discourse analysis.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Discriminates between the inflectional and derivational suffixes.
2Recognizes the prefixes, suffixes and infixes used in specific words.
3Explains the techniques used in new word formation.
4The student discriminates between transitive and intransitive verbs.
5Explains the difference between linguistic competence and performance.
6Explains basic syntactic concepts.
7Explains sentence structure using tree-diagrams.
