Course Objective The primary aim of this course is to introduce basic concepts related to first and second/foreign language acquisition/learning ans also to enable students to understand the stages through which children acquire their first language (L1) and through which children and adults acquire second/foreign languages (L2). Students are expected to form connections among the main methods, theories, and substantive findings in the fields of first language acquisition (FLA) and second language acquisition (SLA). In addition, they are expected to compare and contrast first and second language acquisition theories. A final aim of the course is to raise students' awareness into the reflections of first/second language acquisition processes in second/foreign language teaching.
Course Content Theories of first and second language acquisition (behaviorism, innatism, information processing, connective models, interactive approach); developmental stages and processes of mother tongue and target language; case studies, comparative analysis of mother and target language use from corpus data, comparison of second language acquisition in children and adults through records/transcription of second language interaction in class, developmental stages in mother language acquisition, morphosyntactic developmental stages in second language, second language acquisition processes, learner characteristics in second language acquisition and individual differences in ultimate attainment (e.g., personality impact, language aptitude, intelligence, age of acquisition, motivation and attitude, learner preferences and beliefs), differences in second language and foreign language learning contexts (e.g., natural and formal education environments).
