COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop high level writing and reading skills such as comprehending different viewpoints, guessing the transitions between parts, getting the main idea and using the clues between sentences with the help of recent written texts and research articles on English language teaching. It is also aimed to develop advanced level critical thinking skills such as combining knowledge, solving a problem and reacting based on assessment. Students will have the opportunity of using and practicing their low level reading skills. Also, APA rules are withing the scope of the course. After APA rules are discussed, they will be practiced with the use of research articles so that students will analyze how research articles are designed and what commonicative purposes are achieved in each section of articles.
Course Content The course focuses on summarizing and/or reporting on recent written texts and research articles on English language teaching, analyzing such articles from their own perspective by localizing the knowledge and preparing students so that they can create their own texts. Besides, with the help of these research articles, students analyze how APA rules are used.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Analyzes the textual characteristics (the writer’s purpose, target audience, organization, content, discourse, language use, text construction, supporting ideas, etc.) of English texts of various genres.
2Writes long texts of various genres using online and offline sources in line with academic English writing conventions.
3Identifies the main idea and supporting evidence in a text.
4Makes notes and annotations based on the ideas and evidence presented in the text.
