COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective 1. The aim of this course is to teach students the causes and effects of scientific and technological developments on the changes of social structure. 2. To help students to gain skill and knowledge how to criticize theoretical approaches about social change to show their advantages and disadvantages. 3. To teach students to comprehend the effects of science and technology on social changes based on several reasons in different locations and in different historical periods. 4. To help students to think and reason about in which area scientific and technological developments take place in the near future and how these developments impact social structure, social relations, ideologies and life styles. 5. To teach students to gain critical thinking and offering solutions about how to scientific and technological developments contribute to social changes positively in Turkish society first and in other world societies later.
Course Content Science and technology relation in past and present; the developments experienced in daily science and technology from the past; the effects of science and technology on social change; common science inheritance of mankind; famous Turkish scientists; foreign scientists; tissue and organ transplantation, nano-technology, genetic technology; Turkish Patent Institute; copyright and patent rights; space and aviation studies.
Prerequisites No the prerequisite of lesson.
Corequisite No the corequisite of lesson.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Students comprehend the change of social structure as the results of scientific and technological developments.
2Students critically analyze the basic theories and approaches about social change by showing their advantages and disadvantages.
3Students explain science and technology change social structure at different times and places on the basis of a variety of factors.
4Students prepare a research paper including their own opinion and asessment about science, technology and social change by reviewing the past related scientific research.
5Students acquire the knowledge and ability of how to present effectively their prepared research project to the class.
6Students make group work by acquiring social responsibility knowledge and skills.
7Students analyze objectively the changes in Turkish society.
8students recommend appropriate solutions to the problems which result from national and global changes.
