COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The territories of the fantastical imagination since Beowulf tried to be mapped however as Terry Pratchett says “There are no maps. You can’t map a sense of humour” or fantastical imagination. The focus of this course is going to be how fantasy builds fictive worlds and how fantastical worlds differ from each other, such as: Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland, or J. R. R: Tolkien’s Middle Earth or Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea or Terry Pratchett’s Discworld. Thus, in this course students will read and analyze some of the most popular and significant works of the literary genre of fantasy, a genre that overlaps myth, science fiction, and the supernatural, but also differs from these forms in tone, theme, setting and overall effect.

8Evaluates the contribution of the fantasy novel to the development of the English novel.
9Analyzes the relationship of the fantasy novel to other genres, crossing points and their interactions.
10Identifies the development stages of the fantasy novel by comparing the novels.
11Identifies the narrative strategies of the fantasy novel.
