COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective To describe reactions of phenols, carbonyl compounds, carboxylic acids, amines, sulphur compounds, aminoacids and proteins. Each part of this course is planned to reinforce and build on earlier material, thereby developing a sound understanding of the fundamentals of modern organic chemistry.
Course Content Physical properties and reactions of phenols, Nomenclature and classification of ethers and epoxides, Preparations of aldehydes and ketones, Some reactions of aldehydes and ketones, Carboxylic acids and preparation, General reactions and derivatives of carboxylic acids, Amines, preparation and reactions, Sulphur compounds, Active methylene compounds, Amino acids and proteins.
