COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The aim of course analyzing the Ottoman art and architecture from the end of the 16th century to the year of 1683 and examine the change in art and architecture.
Course Content Will focus on the process of Ottoman architecture and art from the late XVI. Century until the II. Vienne siege(1683). Interesting reflections on art of unproductivety features of this period and changing trends especially in complexes and other architectural monuments were built by the architects which were trained by Mimar Sinan will be explained.
Prerequisites No the prerequisite of lesson.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Will be able to know the examples of the Ottoman art and architecture from the end ofthe 16th century to the year of 1683.
2Will be able to define and compare the features of the buildings from the time of Sultan Suleiman I Magnificent.
3Will be able to explain the features in the complex of Choban Mustafa Pasha.
4Will be able to describe the general features in the mosques and madrasas of Rustem Pasha at Constantinople.
5Will be able to explain the historical events and architectural activities of Sultan Selim II.
6Will be able to describe the life and the works of Sinan, the Architect.
7Will be able to explain the Institution of Royal Architects (Hassa Mimarları Ocağı).
8Will be able to analyze the Sinan’s mosques which on the six footings.

1 Events of Selim I period will be depicted in addition Fatih Paşa Mosque in Diyarbakır and Great Mosqoue in Elbistan will be introduced.
2 Selim I Complex in İstanbul will be asserted.
3 Events of Sultan Süleyman I period and Çoban Mustafa Paşa Complex built in Kanuni Period will be explained with similar frontal adornment in mosque.
4 Life of Mimar Sinan one of the famous architect of the period and his works will be explained. On map, the topics like the distribution of buildings built by Mimar Sinan, chronicles giving list of his products and Hassa Mimarlar Ocağı will be explained in details.
5 Hüsrev Pasha in Halep and İstanbul-Haseki complexes will be presented. The buildings in the Complex will be explained one by one. Şehzade Complex contaning the mosque that Mimar Sinan called “my apprentice work” and Üsküdar Mihrimah Sultan Complex will be presented. Ceramic seen in buildings, pen work, wooden and Stone decoration compositions will be explained.
6 The focus will be on two big Complexes built by Kanuni in Damascus and Istanbul. These complexes will be compared with general plan arrangements.
7 Haseki Sultan in Istanbul Sultanahmet and Turkish bath with ceramics in Zeyrek will be presented. Also, with Hadım İbrahim Pasha Mosque in İstanbul-Silivrikapı Ottoman mosques with eight piers that Mimar Sinan built will be briefly explained. Besides, Tatarhan Mosque in Kırım will be compared with Fatih Mosque.
8 Mosque and Madrasah, which Rüstem Pasha, one of the effective statesmen of the period, ordered to be built in Istanbul will be presented. Especially, the contribution of the mosque to evaluation of plan of Ottoman architecture and program of ceramic decoration will be explained. Caravanserai in Edirne that Rüstem Pasha ordered to build and the Mosque of Sinan Pasha in İstanbul Beşiktaş will be explained. Mosque with three şerefe in Edirne and the Mosque of Sinan Pasha will be compared from the point of plan.
9 The Mosque of Kara Ahmed Pasha, one of the mosques based on six piers, built by Mimar Sinan in Topkapı, and Molla Çelebi Mosque in Fındıklı, Semiz Ali Pahsa Mosque in Babaeski and Mihrimah Sultan Mosques in Edirnekapı will be explained.

11 The kulliye containing the bridge built by Mimar Sinan in Büyükçekmece, caravanserai and mosque and the Mosque of Behram Pasha Mosque, whose dome based on eight piers, in Diyarbakir will be compared with the buildings in capital.
12 By informing about the history of period of Selim II, the Mosque of Zal Mahmud Pasha in Eyüp and Selimiye Mosque in Konya will be explained by drawings and pictures.
13 Selimiye Complex in Edirne will be explained in details. The centre of mosque, the most attractive building of the Complex, regarding its authencity within planned buildings will be compared generally with the similar planned buildings in the whole world.
14 Complexes in Lüleburgaz, Ilgın, Havsa and Karapınar the large complex examples of second half of XVI. Century will be explained. Within the frame of these buildings, the focus will be on the analysis that Mimar Sinan brought out to distance complexes.
