COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The aim of course is defining Ottoman art from begginning of 15th centruy to earlier 16th centruy.
Course Content Architecture of the Ottoman Empire in the period beginning from Mehmed the Conquerer to Selim I (1451-1512 A.D.) will be explained.
Prerequisites No the prerequisite of lesson.
Corequisite No the corequisite of lesson.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Will be able to define the buildings from the reign of Sultan Mehmed II.
2Will be able to explain the features of architecture and plan in the mosques of Sheikh Vefa at Istanbul, Kasim Pasha at Edirne and Acem Reis at Bursa. 1.3. Will be able to define and compare the mosques of Tuz Pazari at Bursa, Ahmed Dai at Bursa and the mosques of Hersekoglu Ahmed Pasha at Herzegovina and Keşan-Edirne.
3Will be able to explain the features and importance of the Mosques of Mahmud Pasha at Sophia, Sheikh Sinan at Alashehir, Sitti Hatun at Edirne and the Masjid of Yatagan. Will be able to evaluate the plan typologies, material and ornamentation programs in the buildings from the time of the Sultan Mehmed II.
4Will be able to have detailed information about the environment of culture and art during the reign of the Sultan Bayezid II and the contemporary historical events.
5Will be able to know and present the complexes of Davud Pasha at İstanbul and Sultan Bayezid II at Amasya. Will be able to explain the features of the Great Complex of the Sultan Bayezid II at Edirne and the importance of its educational structures in the Ottoman Architecture. Will be able to define the features and importance of the Madrasa and Bedesten of Kapı Agasi Hüseyin Aga at Amasya and the Mosque of Firuz Aga at Sultanahmed-Istanbul.
6Will be able to describe the Great Complex of the Sultan Bayezid II. Will be able to define and compare the Mosques of Cemberlitas at İstanbul, Atik Ali Pasha at Zincirlikuyu-Istanbul, and Bali Pasha at Fatih-Istanbul.
7Will be able to compare and evaluate the buildings from the reings of the Sultan Bayezid II and the Sultan Mehmed II.Will be able to have detailed information about the historical events during the reign of the Sultan Selim I and examine the features of plan in the Mosque of Fatih Pasha.
8Will be able to have information about the Mosque of Eyüp-Cezeri Kasım Paşa and The Mosque and the Complex of the Sultan Yavuz Selim I. Will be able to make general evaluation of the plans, material, and ornamentation programs of the buildings, from the foundation to the end of the reign of the Sultan Selim I at the Ottoman capitals: İznik, Bursa, Edirne and İstanbul.
9Will be able to have information about the historical events during the reign of the Sultan Suleiman I, the Magnificent and explore the zenith of the Ottman art and Architecture.

WeeksTopics
1 The buildings of Fatih period will be continued. Fatih Bedesteni in Galata will be compared with the similar ones built before. Also, the focus will be on the Mosque of Seyh Vefa in İstanbul. Kasım Pasha in Edirne and Bursa-Acem Reis mosques will be explained.
2 Salt Bazaar in Bursa, the Mosque of Ahmed Dai and the buildings that Hersekoğlu Ahmed Pahsa ordered to be built in Hersek and Kesan will be explained by drawings and images, and compared with the similar ones.
3 Explaining the Mosque of Sofya-Mahmud Pasha and Yatağan Small Mosque, one of the original wooden buildings of Fatih period, Alaşehir-Seyh Sinan and Edirne Sitti Hatun mosques, their importance in Turkish architecture will be explained.
4 Also, all the buildings built in Fatih period will be generally explained with their plan typology, material and decoration characteristics. After general information about history of Bayezid II period, the focus will be on culture and art of this period.
5 The focus will be on the complexes that Davud Pasha ordered in Istanbul and Bayezid II in Amasya.
6 The large complex that Bayezid ordered to be built in Edirne will be presented. By stressing education facilities of the complex, its place in Ottoman architecture will be defined.
7 Madrasah that Kapı Ağası Hüseyin Agha ordered to be built in Amasya and facilities like bedesten will be explained. Also, the Mosque of Firuz Agha in İstanbul-Sultanahmet will be explained.
8 Mid-term Exam
9 İstanbul-Çemberlitaş one of the buildings of Bayezid II period and the Mosque of Atik Ali Pasha will be resented.
10 The largest complex that Bayezid II ordered to be built in İstanbul will be explained and the focus will be on its importance in Ottoman architecture.
11 The Mosque of Bali Pasha in Istanbul-Fatih will be presented. The buildings of the periods of Fatih and Bayezid II will be compared through a general evaluation. Then by giving brief information about the period of Yavuz Sultan Selim, the Mosque of Fatih Pasha will be analyzed with its contemporaries.
12 The Mosque of Yavuz Selim, one of the largest selatin mosques of Istanbul, and its Complex and the Mosque of Eyüp-Cezeri Kasım Pasha will be presented.
13 A general evaluation will be made through considering decoration programs, material and plans of the buildings built in the cities, İznik, Bursa, Edirne and Istanbul which had been capital of the Ottoman State.
14 After a brief introduction to the Ottoman history in the period of Kanuni, general information about the architecture, which had developed and reached its peak in this period, will be presented.
