COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The aim of course is having information about Islam, the concept of Islamic art, History of Islam, The political, social and cultural context of Middle East during the Emergence and Rise of Islam and the Ummayyads and examine the art and architecture of Early Islamic Period.
Course Content Concepts of Islam and Islamic Art, political and cultural environment at the emergence of Islam, the architecture and decorations such as mosques, khans, baths, palaces, defensive structures etc. from the period of four caliphs and the Umayyad dynasties will be discussed in detail. The araes interaction with Early Islamic Art will be considered in the light of the general understanding of space and decoration.
Prerequisites No the prerequisite of lesson.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Will be able to define the sources of Islamic Art and the political, social and cultural features of Middle East during the Emergence of Islam. Will be able to have information about the architectural features of Ka’ba.
2Will be able to have detailed information about Masjid-i Nebewi as the prototype of the Islamic mosques. Will be able to define the general features of the mosque and dar’ul-imare at Qufa and the mosques of Basra and Vasıt.
3Will be able to explain the Ummayyad period and the general features of Ummayyad buildings. Will be able to describe the ornamentations and plan of Ummayyad Mosque at Damascus.
4Will be able to define and have detailed information about Masjid-i Aksa at Kudüs (Jerussalem) and the Mosque of Sidi Ukba at Kayravan with the features of plans.
5Will be able to define the Kubbetu’s-Sahra at Kudüs and compare with the similar examples of Byzantine architecture.
6Will be able to describe Khirbat’al Minye and Qusayr Amra with their outstanding figural representations. Will be able to define the place of Quasary Amra in the early İIslamıc Architecture.
7Will be able to compare Qusayr Amra with Hamam’es-Sarah and Qasr’al-Khayr’al- Garbi on the base of similarities in plans.
8Will be able to have detailed information about Ummayyad Civil Architecture with the examples of Qasr’al-Tuba and Qasr’al-Harane
9Will be able to describe Khirbat’al Mafcar and analyze the influences of Roman and Byzantine architecture.
10Will be able to compare Qasr’al-Khayr’al-Sharqi with the similar structures.
11Will be able to evaluate the features of architecture, material, ornamentation and plan of the buildings from the Emergence of Islam to the end of the Ummayyads.Will be able to summarize the collapse of the Ummayyads and the foundation of the Ummayads of Andalucia-Spain.
