COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective Studying the monuments, architectural practices and architects of the period starting from the campaign into the Orient of Alexander the Great in 334 BC to the time when Augustus became the Roman emperor. Knowing the urbanisation and buildings of the Hellenistic period in Anatolia. Knowing the structures, architects and architectural ornamentation of the Hellenistic period and being able to date them.
Course Content Architectural practices, properties and architects will be explored with examples built in the period after Alexander the Great’s campaign into the Orient. Particularly, the structures of the second century BC and important cities such as Pergamon will be taken as basis and phasic implementations will be presented using selected examples. Architectural ornamentation such as Corinthian capitals, anthemion and Ionic cymatium will be explored with examples within the frame of historic development.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1To have an idea about Hellenistic architecture and their historical connections.
2To know the Hellenistic structures in general.
3To have an idea about the urbanization and structures of Hellenistic Period in Anatolia
4Trained in the Hellenistic Period and trecognize architects who have built the structure.
5To have an idea about the features of Hellenistic structures.
6To be able to comment on the periodical differences between structures.
7To be able to distinguish Hellenistic Period ornamentation and to distinguish it from its historical process.
8To be able to know the first occurrence of Corinthian capitals and applications in the Hellenistic Period.
