COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The course aims to introduce the origin and formation process of the Byzantine Art; understanding of the effects of social and cultural changings in Late Antiquity, to explain the conversion of art production shaped with pagan beliefs in the process of Christianization. 
Course Content Will examine changes in the distribution of the art production after Christianity. The physical structures of the Byzantine period cities and Istanbul, will be examined. Early Christian period paintings, sculptures and relief works will be examined. Terminology of Christian architecture will be described.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Will be able to recognize with examples of the main character and supplies of Early Christian art.
2Will be able to discuss the reinterpretation of the pagan elements in the Christian art.
3Will be able to discuss the iconography of Chirstian art in Late Antiquity period.
4Will be able to provide information about the monuments and topographical structure of the Istanbul in early period.
