COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The aims of the course are to understand, describe and study phases and features of Serious Style and High Phase with the history and political issues of the Classical period. The objectives of the course are to understand and study the sculptures and sculptors of each phases of Classical sculpture.
Course Content During this course, sculptors mentioned by antique writers will be studied and their way to create a movement to the static statues of Archaic Era during 5th century BC in, how the nations in Hellas Peninsula and Anatolia created different and peculiar art movements, the works made by the sculptors and the sculptor’s style will be told. Also, the synthesis of east and west developed after the Persian invasion in Western Anatolia and Athens will be explained and strengthened by original Works. Political, economic and cultural developments of the transitional period from Archaic to classical period will be discussed.

1To be able to understand the evolution of sculpture form the Archaic period to the beginning of Classical period.
2To be able to describe the phases of classical sculpture in relation with historical and political events.
3 To be able to recognize the main characteristics of Severe Style.
4To be able to understand sculpture of Severe Style.
5To have a basic knowledge about the main characteristics of High Phase.
6To be able to recognize principle sculptors of High Phase and their works.
7To be able to express the importance of reliefs on architecture during High Phase.

Goals The aims of the course are to understand, describe and study phases and features of Serious Style and High Phase with the history and political issues of the Classical period. The objectives of the course are to understand and study the sculptures and sculptors of each phases of Classical sculpture.
Content During this course, sculptors mentioned by antique writers will be studied and their way to create a movement to the static statues of Archaic Era during 5th century BC in, how the nations in Hellas Peninsula and Anatolia created different and peculiar art movements, the works made by the sculptors and the sculptor’s style will be told. 1 Methods of lecture and bibliography will be explained. Developments of sculpture froma Archaic Period to the beginning of Classical Period will be briefly explained with examples.
2 Phases of Classical Period sculpture, historical and political events that the period, dating methods, features of the period will be given.
3 General information about Severe Style, the first phase of Classical Period sculpture and pediment statues of Aegina Aphaia Temple which is a construction of this phase will be explained.
4 Important artifacts of the Severe Style phase, such as Harpy Monument, Sitting Goddess of Berlin, Kore of Euthydikos, Blonde Boy, and Kritios Boy will be explained.
5 Important artifacts of the Severe Style phase, such as Tyrant Slayers Group, Charioteer of Delphi, Metopes of Selinus Temple E, Ludovisi Throne and Boston Reliefs will be described.
6 The most important main framework of Severe Style in Classical Period sculpture, Olympia Zeus Temple will be explained in general, besides its pediments and metopes will be described in details.
7 Charioteer of Motia, Bronze Warriors of Riace, Giustiniani Stele, Upset Athena, Sunion Stele, Girl with dove, Thasos Grave Relief, Grave Steles from Sinop, and statue of Penolope will be described.
8 Detailed information will be given about the artifacts of transition from Severe Style to Classical High Phase such as Choiseul-Gouffier Apollo, Apollo of Omphalos, and bronze Zeus statue.
9 High Phase in Classical Period sculpture, general features of this period’s statues, information’s about important sculptors of this period (Myron, Pheidias, Polykleitos) given by ancient authors and development of sculpture in this period will be explained in general.
10 General features of Myron, who is the one of the most important sculptors of High Phase in Classical Period, his contributions to sculpture and his artifacts will be explained in detail.
11 General features of Phidias, who is the one of the most important sculptors of his contributions to sculpture and his artifacts, will be explained in detail.
12 General information about Athena Parthenon Temple, which is the main framework of High Phase in Classical Period, detailed information of its pediments, metopes and friezes will be given.
13 General features of Polycleitus, who is the one of the most important sculptors of High Phase in Classical Period, his contributions to sculpture and his artifacts will be explained in detail.
14 Information about the Roman Period replicas of the artifacts by Myron, Pheidias and Polycleitus, who are the most important sculptors of High Phase in Classical Period, and criticism of replication will be given.
