Objective

The core value underlying the Pamukkale University humanities and social sciences research policy is intellectual independence. As part of its effort to uphold this value, PAU’s mission includes training its graduate students to comprehensively understand the intellectual traditions of, and to utilize methods and concepts pertaining to, Eastern and Western civilizations. This educational endeavor necessitates a certain degree of proficiency in multiple languages. For this reason, all students enrolled in thesis-based graduate programs at Pamukkale University are required to gain said proficiency in a minimum of three languages by the time they graduate. Not only will this requirement help PAU graduates think in different languages and express their ideas in these languages, it will also allow them significantly greater access to primary sources. The minimum three languages necessitated by the Pamukkale University curriculum consist of: Arabic, the gateway to intellectual traditions in Eastern and Islamic social sciences; English, the common research language in Western social sciences; and Turkish, our national language and the bridge that has connected these civilizations and intellectual traditions throughout history. In order to help both national and international students acquire these languages, the University offers an English preparation program at a set fee, and offers Turkish and Arabic preparation programs at no cost to the student. If necessary, enrolled students are able to take additional courses to fulfill the language proficiency requirement. PAU provides all graduate students with the opportunity to take courses on other languages that are necessary and specific to their chosen research
