Course Objective The aim of the course is to provide learners the general knowledge to recognize pests in the field of plant protection at Phylum or Order level, to understand their biology, damage symptoms and control measurements. The aim of this course is also to give fundamental knowledge on morphological structures, symptoms and distribution patterns of fungal, bacterial and viral agents causing diseases in plants, and general features of weeds, their benefits and harmful effects, and to get understanding the control methods of these plant pathogens and weeds.
Course Content Causes of diseases, general features of plant pathogens, symptoms, spread and transmission of pathogens, epidemiology, weeds and parasitic plants, basic weed control methods, morphology of insects, function and structure of insect systems, the growth and development of insects, insect ecology, classification, general features of nematodes and mites. Basic management and control methods of pests and diseases.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1 Knows symptoms of abiotic factors and give recommendations to solve abiotic disease problems.
2Recognize the general characteristics and symptoms of biotic causes of disease such as fungi, bacteria and viruses.
3Identify semi-parasitic and parasitic plants, knows differences of these plants from weed species and give recommendations to control weeds and parasitic plants.
4Identify diseases of some important horticultural and agronomic crops.
5Understands the ways of transmission and spread of disease agents.
6Have information about disease control methods (sanitation, resistant plants, biological, mechanical and chemical) and their practical applications in agriculture.
7 Have knowledge on general pest management and control principles.
