Course Objective
To give basic information about the classification, structural properties, biosynthesis and functions of phytochemicals (secondary metabolites) in horticultural plants. * To provide an understanding of their importance and functions in terms of human and plant health.
Course Content
Introduction to phytochemicals (secondary metabolites); Historical and current overview with definitions and concepts, Classification of phytochemicals in horticultural crops, Occurrence and activities in plants, Importance and functions of phytochemicals in plant physiology, Importance of phytochemicals in horticultural crops as nutritional elements for human health and welfare, Integrated public, scientific and personal approaches to reduce the cost of chronic diseases in terms of public health and economy, Bioactive compounds in fruits, Bioactive compounds in fruits, Bioactive compounds in vegetables, Bioactive compounds in vegetables, Bioactive compounds in vegetables, Extraction and utilization of phytochemicals from fruits and vegetables, Secondary metabolite production under in vitro conditions, Strategies for improving phytochemical content in horticultural crops-1, Strategies for improving phytochemical content in horticultural crops-2
