COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The place of fruit growing in the national economy, classification of fruit species, ecological requirements, biological and physiological characteristics, flower bud formation in fruit trees, flowering and fertilization biology, propagation and seedling production, orchard establishment, technical and cultural practices, fruit pomology and important fruit varieties, pruning, harvesting, preservation and marketing.
Course Content Classification of fruit growing, economics, fruit species grown in Turkey and variety richness, ecological requirements, flower bud formation in fruit trees, bud and branch structures, fertilization biology, parthenocarpy, apomixis, flower and fruit shedding, thinning, periodicity, resting in fruit seeds and buds, growth regulators, propagation and cultivation of fruit seedlings, garden establishment, annual maintenance, various technical and cultural practices, nutrition of fruit trees, functions of roots and water balance, carbon assimilation, pruning and training systems, harvesting, standardization of products, packaging, preservation and marketing.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Learns ecological requirements and ecological problems of fruit species.
2Learns the events from flower bud formation to fruit set in fruit trees.
3Learns fertilization of fruit trees, nutrients in the soil, photosynthesis and storage of reserve nutrients, water balance and its importance.
4Learns the history of fruit growing culture, fruit species grown in the world and in our country, the richness of varieties and the importance of fruit growing for the national economy.
