COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective Christianity was born an eastern mediterranean phenomenon in its earliest phase, but organized in the cities of ancient Anatolia. Through the Hellenistic heritage of Anatolia this new religion began to differ, but nevertheless it managed to become an important part of the landscape in the towns such as Antioch, Ephesus, Sardis, Smyrna, Lystra. How these different Christian groups differed from each other and their cultural links with the native pagan culture of the regions from which those groups emerged. The course chronologically will concentrate on the rise of Christianity from the first century to the beginning of the fourth century.
Course Content Religious geography of Anatolia; The mission of Paul in Asia Minor and the regions christianized by him; Jewsih Christianity in Asia Minor; Montanist Christianity in Anatolia.
