COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective Principally, it is aimed to examine the cities of the Byzantine period in the light of epigraphic, historical sources and archaeological data. The conditions that were effective in the transformation of cities in the early Byzantine period will be discussed; urban management organization will be defined, the basic elements that shape cities will be evaluated and the main architectural elements in the cities will be defined.
Course Content The effect of Christianity on urban life and urban structure will be discussed during and after the Late Antiquity. The important cities of the empire such as Constantinopolis, Rome, Ephesos, Antiocheia and Alexandria will be examined monographically. The effects of Byzantine geography and the changing structure of the empire on the concepts of architecture and urbanism will be explained.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Will be able to discuss about the historical geography of the Byzantine period.
2Will be able to define monographic researches about Byzantine period cities.
3Will be able to define the factors that play a role in the change of cities in the transition period from Late Antiquity to the Byzantine period.
4Will be able to evaluate the effects of the Byzantine period social and political structure and the changes in religious beliefs on urban life.
