Course Objective Nowadays new media (digital technologies) and new media environments are inseparable parts of our everyday lives. The effects of new media and the usage of new media are discussed by different disciplines from sociology, anthroplogy, to cultural studies, economics, as well as communication studies. Thus, the effects on both individuals and society of these new information technologies are widely disscussed from different perspectives and new study is emerged, called as new media studies. In this course content, different research methods and techniques will be introduced with in the context of new media studies.
Course Content Within this course, the different research methods and techniques will be introduced theoretically and practically on new media environments. The topiics such as: textual analysis (content analysis, dicourse analysis), big data and SNS, user/audience studies (online survey, digital ethnograpy, nethnograpy, participant observation, lurking position, indepth-interview, reception studies, tekno-journals, the recoding techniques etc.); the position of researcher and the self-reflexivity, research ethics, and data ethics will be introduced. With regard to each topic, the main readings from the literature will be introduced and readings from the selected research will be discussed.

1By the end of the course, students should be able to learn different research methods and techniques in new media studies
2Studensts are expected to raise consciousness on research ethics while conducting a research on new media environments.
3Students are expected to have abilities to develop a knowledge on big data and social network analysis, and learn some applications.
4 Students are to develop a conceptual framework to grasp the role of algorythms, while conducting a reserach.
5Students are supposed to develop research designs when to conduct reseacrhes regarding social media.
