Course Objective Understanding and making sense of art as representation. Analyzing images in artwork, reading cultural codes. To use visual analysis approaches such as semiotics and iconography and to develop new strategies. Reading recent art events and works of art. Writing articles and papers for current and academic journals.
Course Content Meaning in art and visual readings course primarily focuses on understanding how meaning is formed in various disciplines of visual arts and how visual media is interpreted. The important concepts and techniques of visual reading, method approaches used for reading pictures, photographs, films and other visual materials, and strategies developed are included in the course. - History and development of visual arts, important transformations, movements and influences in art history. - Analysis of the social, political, cultural and economic contexts of visual media, media criticism, media manipulation, advertising, cinema, television, digital media and other types of visual media. - The effect of visual culture on identities such as social, gender, race, class and nationality, and the contribution of visual symbols to identity formation. - Interpretation and criticism of visual arts, aesthetic, historical, political, cultural and social contexts of art, interpretation strategies and critical perspectives. - The relationship between visual arts and technological developments, new media and digital art, presentation of visual arts in the virtual world and analyzing widely used digital platforms. In addition to these topics, the course content may include workshops where students can gain hands-on experience. For example, having students participate in activities such as taking photos, drawing, video production or creating digital art can help them reinforce what they've learned and produce content.
