COURSE DESCRIPTION
Course Level Master's Degree
Course Type Elective
Course Objective This course introduces students to the design, conduct, and presentation of qualitative research. Issues of “quality” (reliability, validity) are discussed as methods of data collection, analysis, and interpretation are studied and practiced. The course aims to enable students to experience the research process in the course of learning how to plan, execute, evaluate, and present qualitative research. Assignments and a term project provide practice in research design and data collection, analysis, and presentation. In this way, the role of various creative skills, including oral and written skills, in gathering, interpreting, and reporting on qualitative data are also emphasized. The course provides an opportunity for learning from each other while students present and discuss their research and the readings. Students are encouraged to develop research proposals relevant to their dissertation or other projects of interest.
Course Content • Week 1: Paradigm Shift from Quantitative to Qualitative Research Method • Week 2: Comparison of Quantitative and Qualitative Research Designs Week 3: Qualitative Research Designs: Grounded Theory, Ethnography and Phenomenology • Week 4: Qualitative Research Designs: Case Studies, Action Research, and Design-based Research • Week 5: Literature Review and Ethical Issues • Week 6: Sampling in Qualitative Research • Week 7: Data Collection Methods in Qualitative Research • Week 8: Designing Interview Schedules • Week 9: Focus Group Interviews • Week 10: Designing Observation Schedules • Week 11: Data Analysis: Descriptive Analysis, Content Analysis and Constant Comparative Data Analysis • Week 12: Analysis of Interview and Observation Results • Week 13: Reliability and Validity in Qualitative Research • Week 14: Presentation of Qualitative Research Proposal
