Course Objective In this course the basic concepts of microbiology and biochemistry, biological transformations of natural and artificial chemical substances are provided to students in order to acquire them sufficient knowledge to understand and use this information.
Course Content The structure of cells, Fundamental molecules of Lifecycle, Review of cellular metabolism: Glycolysis, and TCA cycle, Respiration and fermentation, Fatty acid metabolism, Microbial polyhydroxyalkanoates, Polysaccharides and lipids, Transport across cell membranes, Metabolic stoichiometry and energetics: Generation of ATP and ransfer of biochemical energy, NAD formation and transfer of electrons, Coupling of ATP-NAD and respiratory chain, Metabolic engineering applications in Environmental Science and Engineering.
Prerequisites No the prerequisite of lesson.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Explains types of microorganisms along with their intracellular components and material transport through their membranes that have importance in environmental engineering.
2Provides information about basic metabolic pathways, aerobic metabolism of carbohydrates, hydrocarbons, nitrogen compounds and anaerobic metabolism of carbohydrates.
3Explains fermentation, TCA cycle, ATP formation and electron transfer.
4Presents information about different metabolisms encountered in environmental engineering applications.
