COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective To provide information about the pharmacology, effects, side effects, interactions, and dose adjustments of psychopharmacological drugs used in the treatment of psychiatric disorders and to discuss the responsibilities of the nurse.
Course Content This course provides an introduction to psychopharmacology and covers the classification of psychopharmacological agents and their pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, use, indications, side effects, and drug interactions. In addition, the pharmacology, effects, side effects, and drug interactions of drug classes such as antidepressants, anxiolytics, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers are covered in detail. Stimulation therapies such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) are also part of this course. Special topics such as psychotropic medication use during pregnancy and lactation, psychotropic medication use in the elderly and substance use disorder treatment are also covered in this course. Finally, medication practices in psychiatric nursing, patient and family education, and interdisciplinary cooperation are included.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1The student will have knowledge about the classification, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of psychopharmacological agents and will be familiar with the use and indications of psychopharmacological agents.
2The student will have knowledge about the pharmacology, effects, side effects, and drug interactions of different psychopharmacological drugs such as antidepressants, anxiolytics, antipsychotics, and mood stabilizers and understand the role and management of these drugs in the treatment process.
3The student will have knowledge about the application, side effects, and effectiveness of stimulation therapies such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and will have an idea about in which cases these treatments should be used.
4The student will understand drug administration techniques, patient and family education and interdisciplinary cooperation and will be effective and efficient in patient care by using this knowledge in practice.
