Course Objective The aim of this course is to provide students with basic knowledge about the history and development of psychotherapy, therapeutic relationship, communication skills, different psychotherapy approaches, group psychotherapy, ethics, and cultural differences, as well as the effectiveness of therapy. Additionally, the course aims to help students understand and develop solutions to the challenges they may encounter during the therapy process. It also teaches students the professional standards necessary for therapy practice and contributes to their professional identity development.
Course Content This course provides a comprehensive overview of the topic of psychotherapy. The first part of the course covers the history and development of psychotherapy, as well as fundamental concepts and skills such as therapeutic relationships, therapeutic communication, and Socratic questioning. The course then delves into various psychotherapy approaches, including psychoanalytic, cognitive, behavioral, humanistic, and phenomenological approaches. The topic of group psychotherapy is also covered, including its basic features, benefits and limitations, and leadership and membership in group therapy. The course also addresses ethical issues in psychotherapy, such as professional standards, confidentiality, and boundary maintenance. The topic of psychotherapy and culture is discussed in detail, including how cultural differences are addressed in the psychotherapy process, barriers to accessing therapy, and cultural competence. Finally, the course explores the effectiveness of therapy, including challenges and solutions in the therapeutic process, measurement, and evaluation of therapeutic outcomes.
