Course Objective This course covers the fundamentals of psychiatric semiotics and mental status examination techniques in psychiatric nursing. Psychiatric semiotics is a field that defines the symptoms and signs of psychiatric illnesses. This course provides students with knowledge on identifying symptoms of psychiatric illnesses, understanding the causes of psychiatric symptoms, and managing these symptoms. Mental status examination is a set of techniques used in the assessment of psychiatric patients. This course teaches students the necessary techniques for conducting a mental status examination, and helps them determine patients' needs and develop appropriate care plans based on the results of this examination. The aim of this course is to assist psychiatric nurses in becoming more effective and knowledgeable in the care of psychiatric patients.
Course Content The content of this course consists of mental status assessment, depressive mood, anhedonia, anxiety, attention deficits, memory impairments, sleep disorders, somatic symptoms, perceptual disturbances, judgmental impairments, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, eating disorders, intellectual disabilities, elevated moods, reality testing impairments, and related psychiatric disorders.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Students will learn to recognize and effectively use a variety of tools and techniques for mental health assessment.
2Students will gain detailed knowledge about the identification and management of psychiatric symptoms such as depressive mood, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and eating disorders.
3Students will learn about cognitive symptoms such as attention deficits, memory impairments, and perceptual disturbances, as well as physical symptoms such as somatic complaints.
4Students will also gain knowledge about less common psychiatric symptoms such as elevated mood and reality testing impairments.
5Students will be informed about ethical and legal issues and will put into practice the skills necessary to provide empathetic and knowledgeable care to psychiatric patients.
