Course Objective The purpose of this course is to examine and evaluate all aspects of the Cartesian philosophy in the light of Descartes’ own original works.
Course Content Descartes’ Life and Times, Science and Philosophy in the Seventeenth Century, The Cartesian Method, Knowledge, Intuition, Doubt, First Principles, Self, God, the Avoidance of Error, the nature and knowledge of the physical world, the Role of God in Physics, the Cartesian Circle, the Intellect and the Senses, the Nature of Extended Substance, Science, Mathematics and Mechanical Models, Cartesian Man: Men, Machines and Animals, Res Cogitans, Cartesian Dualism and its Problems, The Mind-Body Union, Sensation and Imagination, Innate Ideas, Freedom, Reason, and the Good Life.
