Course Objective
The aim of the course is to make students have the ability of database modelling based on standards and technologies. At the end of this course, students will be able to identify database processing systems, understand the components of a database application and use Structured Query Language (SQL) to query relational databases.
Course Content
Database management software. The relational model: Data structure, data integrity, relational algebra. Data manipulation by using SQL. Transaction management: Recovery, concurrency. Relational database theory: Dependencies, normal forms. SQL data definition, other features. DBMS architectures and implementations. Query optimization. Procedural extensions to SQL: PL/SQL, database triggers. DBMSs, OQL. Distributed databases, distributed architectures and ODBC. Databases and the Web, Java database programming - JDBC, SQLJ, databases and XML. ORACLE9i. A real-world application project is performed by students.
