Course Objective Teaching both the theory and application of the fundamental principles of mechanics of materials to students.
Course Content Introduction to Mechanics of Materials, Normal Stress, Shear stress, Strain, Mechanical properties of materials, Hooke’s Law, Poisson’s Ratio, Saint-Venant Principle, Principle of Superposition, Elastic Deformation of and Axially Loaded Members, Thermal Stress, Torsion, Torsional Deformation of a Circular Shaft, Power Transmission, Bending, Shear and Moment Diagrams, Bending of beams, Unsymmetric bending, Transverse Shear, Shear stresses in beams, Thin Walled Vessels, Plane-Stress Transformation, Principal Stresses and Maximum in Plane Shear Stress, Mohr’s Circle Plane Stress, Deflections of beams and shafts, Buckling of Columns.
