COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The course aims at evaluating financial markets and institutions in its globalinternational setting. It begins with the concept of “financial assets”, their role in a modern economy and the role of financial markets. We will focus on financial intermediaries, their functions, a short review of their asset/liability management and recent developments, i.e., financial innovation, asset securitization and globalization. The role of government in financial market with reference to Turkey is covered. Considering the recent history of finance in Turkey this is of prime importance. Moreover; depository institutions, Central Bank, creation of money and monetary policy are the subjects covered. Again, the coverage is centered on the Turkish banking industry and the Central Bank of Turkey. Insurance companies, investment companies, pension funds, securities markets, markets for government debt will be analyzed.
Course Content The content of this course will be comprised of mainly examining the structure of financial institutions and markets in developed countries and in Turkey as well as their interactions. The basic topics to be covered in this course are; the evolution of financial institutions, their role within the financial system, the operation of financial markets, their impact on economy, their future role and possible development strategies for Turkish financial markets.
