Course Objective This course is an introduction to the field of Health Economics. Health Economics is an active field of Microeconomics with a large and growing literature. The goal of this course is to better understand the economic theory of health and healthcare. Several economic models in detail, including models of health, addiction, demand for healthcare and demand for insurance will be studied in this course. The emphasis will be on key economic concepts that health economists use to analyse health and healthcare markets. Another goal of the class is to learn to evaluate and interpret empirical findings in health economics. Some of the papers will be discussed in detail to understand the econometric models and the findings reported in those papers.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1By the end of the course, the goal is for students to provide gains on Health Economics as in the following: 1. Microeconomic theory and understanding of key empirical studies on healthcare and health;
22. Understanding of how health insurance impacts the demand for healthcare and its prices;
33. To improve knowledge and skills on the functioning of key healthcare markets, including healthcare services, health workforce, hospitals, pharmaceuticals, and the government’s role in healthcare markets and health and assess its performance.
