COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective Students will learn the basic results about matrix algebra and determinant. By using matrix operations they will be able to solve system of linear equations.
Course Content Matrices, algebraic operations on matrices, special matrices. Elementary operations, echelon matrix, elementary matrices and inverse matrix. Determinant, properties of determinant. Systems of linear equations, Gauss elimination, Gauss-Jordan, inverse matrix and Cramer’s method. Introduction of vector spaces, sub spaces, span and linear independence.
Prerequisites No the prerequisite of lesson.
Corequisite No the corequisite of lesson.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Perform the arithmetic operations of matrix addition, and multiplication.
2Use Gaussian elimination or Gauss-Jordan method to find the general solution of a linear system.
3Express an invertible matrix as a product of elementary matrices.
4Find an LU decomposition of a square matrix.
5Use the cofactor expansion to evaluate the determinant of a square matrix.
6Use Cramer’s rule to solve linear systems of equations.
7Perform algebraic operations on vectors: addition, subtraction, and scalar multiplication.
8Determine whether a given set with two operations is a vector space.
9Determine whether a subset of a vector space is a subspace.
10• Determine whether a set of vectors is linearly independent or linearly dependent.
