COURSE DESCRIPTION

Course Objective The aim of course is eximining the properties, phases and historical development of sculpture and architectural decoration in the Byzantine Art; from the Late Antiquity to the end of Middle Ages.
Course Content This course includes the identification of the types and features of structural, liturgical elements and architectural decorations in Byzantine Art. In the course, origins and development of Byzantine sculpture and architectural decorations will be examine. In this regard, the course is complementary for Byzantine architecture studies. Like all materials of cultural artifacts, the conditions brought about by geographical location are observed in the individual differences in architectural practice, as applied by the mason, according to the taste and economic conditions of the times. Considered from this point of view, the descriptions of plastic architectural features, showing the technical changes over time, are important sources of scientific data for the purpose of classification and dating. This pile of stones, then, provides the means of evaluating as a whole, with all their environmental and historical content.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1Will be able to recognize the important examples of Late Antiquity (early byzantine)period sculptures.
2Will be able to describe the common features of the statues emperor and important officials from 4-5 century AD.
3Will be able to recognize the religious statues and reliefs display in the museums of Istanbul and Anatolia.
4Will be able to define the general features of the sarcophages dating 4-6 century AD. at Anatolia.
5Will be able to define the decorative features and types of structural and liturgical elements of Early Byzantine church architecture, in detail.
6Will be able to explain the liturgical elements and their sub-types in the churches.
7Will be able to introduce the kinds and types of structural elements and discuss the types and the development of column capitals between 4-6. centuries.
8Will be able to evaluate the most important examples of monumental sculptures and architectural ornaments from middle and Late Byzantine period.
9Will be able to discuss the liturgical and structural elements of churhes from these periods and comparing them with similar examples from early dates.
